Sports Massage

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage which involves manipulating the soft tissue and working on trigger points, resulting in a number of benefits including:

  • Improved flexibility and mobility
  • Reduced inflammation and swelling
  • Decreased DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
  • Reduced muscle tension/ relief from tension headaches
  • Reduced risk of injury
  • Break down of scar tissue

As well as improving soft tissue function, sports massage also has a number of psychological benefits including:

  • Reduced levels of stress
  • Promotes mood enhancement
  • Reduces physical fatigue

It is important to note that Sports Massage cannot be used to treat all injuries but this is where my expertise in injury rehabilitation comes in and I will put together the most effect treatment plan for your individual needs.

Injury Assessment

We may discuss other areas which could be connected as sometimes the root of an injury isn’t coming from where the pain is presenting. We will then move on to a thorough physical examination of the injured area which will involve a whole range of tests to help with the diagnosis.

Once diagnosed, the necessary treatment will be carried out and you will be given an individualised rehabilitation plan. Don’t worry you will be given plenty of opportunities to ask any questions to ensure you fully understand what is going on and how to fix it!

Injury Rehabilitation

The most effective rehabilitation plans are those that are achievable and sustainable and therefore we will work together to come up with a plan that will not only get you the results but that you can also commit to.

I do not prescribe quick fixes but an individual and effective plan that is tailored to your injury, lifestyle and your stage of the recovery process. Not only do I want you to return to your original levels of fitness/ activity, I always strive to have you fitter and stronger to prevent reoccurring injuries, after all, the injury occurred whilst you were at your previous fitness level!

Other Techniques Which May Be Used In Your Appointment

Taping

When watching and competing in sport you may have noticed athletes wearing some sort of tape. Different types of tape are used for different reasons. Sometimes tape is used to reduce the range of motion of a joint in order to provide it with additional support to protect it. Other tapes such as Kinesiology tape can be used to help offload a tendon or increase blood flow to an area to aid healing and relieve pain. Tape is not the answer for all injuries but if needed it will be applied in the appointment.

Joint Mobilisations

Joint mobilisations are a different technique to what you may have seen a Chiropractor do (they manipulate joints). Instead, this technique uses repeated oscillatory movements to gently mobilise both peripheral joints and the spine. Some benefits from mobilisations are:

  • Decrease stiffness
  • Increase range of motion
  • Decrease pain
  • Reduce muscle spasm

It is possible to notice an immediate short term improvement of your symptoms with the use of mobilisations, however for these effects to last in the long term it is important that this technique is combined with other treatments as well as correcting underlying issues.
